An/Aesthetics
This exhibition draws on Susan Buck-Morss’ 1993 text for the journal October, “Aesthetics and Anaesthetics: Walter Bejamin’s Artwork Essay Reconsidered.” Students explore the etymology of the term “aesthetic” that Buck-Morss discusses as the Greek aisthitikos: that which is perceptive by feeling. Buck-Morss writes, “Aisthisis is the sensory experience of perception. The original field of aesthetics is not art but reality – corporeal, material nature.” Through the mediums of photography, paint, drawing and installation, the artists will offer their own varied interpretations of this term and explore the evolution of aesthetics through the discourse of the body.
