No Man is an Island

No Man is an Island is a series of mixed media pieces using simplistic collaged images with drawn and inked additions. The use of collage is very minimal with people in desolate white voids, but with the addition of surreal notations Kreutz is able to visually represent the individuals’ wandering mind. The greatest influence for Kreutz while making these pieces was a term coined by the Canadian anthropologist Wade Davis in a TED Talk on endangered cultures. Davis states, ‘you might think of this cultural web of life as being an ethnosphere and you might define the ethnosphere as being the sum total of all thoughts and dreams, myths, ideas, inspirations, intuitions brought into being by the human imagination since the dawn of consciousness.’ This description of the ‘ethnosphere’ is rich with awe and reverence, which Kreutz aims to transcribe into shape and form.

This exhibition will run in conjunction with ‘National Youth Arts Week’, for which Kreutz will host a drop in collage workshop for people of all ages on Saturday, May 5th from 1-5 pm in the gallery. The workshop is free of charge and all materials will be provided.

Julia Kreutz started her studies at Red Deer Collage and then transferred to complete her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University in 2009. Since then Julia has been teaching drawing classes to children and is a co-Founder and Creative Director at the Gam Gallery. This will mark her first solo exhibition.

Gam Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition and comic book release of Sean Karemaker’s ‘Astronaut Journal: What Will you Stop to Smell When All of the Roses Are Gone?’ March 30 – April 30, 2012

Opening Reception: March 30th, 8 pm to 12 am

“Since the time that I was a young child, comic books stood out to me as being more than just cheap entertainment. In the absence of religion the larger than life characters gave me a mythology to look to. I lived in a small town and comics showed A world that I couldn’t imagine. I had no access to information about art history so that comic artists became my main inspiration for my early drawings, paintings and sculpture work. I began to write and draw my own stories. Later in life I began to view comics as being something that was unlikely to make me any money so I stopped making them. I continued to build sculptures and to paint and draw. I found work doing graphic design, 3D design for video games and illustration. For a number of years this pacified me creatively. Several years ago I began to draw comics again. It was slow at first but it quickly became an obsession. I began to work on a series of single panel comics about my experience observing people in Vancouver. I called the comics Astronaut Journal because I felt like an outsider, someone from far away. As I wrote more I began to write stories about my own life. The process was cathartic and it gave me a chance to explore my own thoughts and history. I began to experiment with new composition and art styles and I attempted to develop a writing style. ‘Astronaut Journal: What Will You Stop to Smell When All of the Roses Are Gone?’ is the second book that I have written, drawn and self published within the last few years. The process of making this book has been intense and rewarding.”

Please join us on Saturday, March 10th.  Doors at 8pm.

The screenings will begin at 9pm with six short animations by Tsuchiya followed by a brief question period. Tsuchiya’s animations use a wide variety of materials including “cutouts, shadow puppets, banana peels and photo copies” and pair intense music with vibrant imagery inspired by Buddism and dreams, using shadow graphs and natural influences like the wind to achieve his effects. We are very excited to have meet Tsuchiya, a Japanese resident who is here to alleviate himself and his family from the radiation caused by the tragic Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant melt down.

Hoji Tsuchiya was born in Tokyo in 1984 and began creating animations in 2004. He has received the Animation Division Grand Prize for his film “A Married Couple’s Distress” in 2007 and Outstanding Performance Award in 2011 for “Elementary School Situation”. In 2011 he received much attention for his animation “Black Long Skirt” where it screened at “TOKYO ANIMA!” at the National Art Center in Tokyo, the Ottawa International Animation Festival, Estonia Animated Dreams and Hannover Up & Coming Film Festival.

We will also be presenting, “Down the Well”, a music video by Patrick Kain for the band Koban, followed by a live performance from the band.

Koban is a Vancouver based dark wave/post-punk duo backed by a drum machine, eerie guitar, repetition, et les paroles en français.
