The Gam is a gallery, boutique and studio located in Vancouver’s downtown east side and fronts ACME, an artist-only building at 110 E Hastings. We share our studio with 12 amazing artists and one masterful curator and we would like to take this opportunity to share our ONE TEN work at 110.

The Gam Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by recent MFA graduate Alison Shields, entitled A Stranger Loop. In the first presentation of her thesis work in Western Canada, Shields explores abstraction through a series of paintings that begin from a single point and evolve infinitely to create a self-contained, self-referential, and yet endlessly self-generating world. The series was created through an elaborate and repetitive process of tracing the marks, drips and forms from an existing painting. These traced drawings archive the act of painting, and serve as a map that reconstructs the space of the subsequent layers, which in turn generate future paintings. The drawings work in a symbiotic relationship with the paintings, each evolving in relation to each other and perpetuating each others’ existence. The resulting paintings are fictional spaces which emerge out of the painting process itself. This exhibition will include new paintings as well as an expanded archive of tracings.

Alison Shields is a painter who began her art career in Vancouver. She received a BFA from the University of British Columbia and an MFA at the University of Waterloo.

Andrew Dick was born and lives in Victoria,B.C. His drawing practise includes bookmaking, teaching young art students in Victoria, interior and exterior murals,and mail art. Andrew’s last show in Vancouver was a collaborative installation with Japanese illustrator Satomi Joba in 2009 at the LES gallery.

Robert Pedersen is currently running Solder and Sons, a small used bookstore/cafe in Vancouver. His recent bookworks include the titles ‘Night Sweepers’ and ‘Edgewater.’ His focus has shifted away from performance and electronics to writing and publishing. ‘Steam hats’  is his first collaborative book with Andrew Dick.

The Gam Gallery would like to present an improved rendition of our third annual NoShit – arts&crafts – show&sale. This year things are going down with a little more flare and exaggeration.

Each artisan will be creating an installation within the gallery to sell their one of a kind pieces.

In “Anaesthetics: Walter Benjamin’s Artwork Essay Reconsidered,” Susan Buck Morss summarizes Benjamin’s concerns at the end of “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” as “the crisis in cognitive experience caused by the alienation of the senses [that] makes it possible for humanity to view its own destruction with enjoyment.”

While for Buck Morss a ‘crisis in cognition’ becomes a concern for the possible reemergence of fascism, it can also speak to humanity in shock, witnessing the destruction of the planet – and by extension its own destruction – and doing nothing.

Buck Morss uses the term anaesthetic to describe the sensory negotiation of overwhelming stimulation: seeking anesthesia in our immersive use technological devices and in the consumption of drugs and alcohol.  Numbness is understood as a defense mechanism and as a consequence of our postindustrial, technologically altered society.

This collaboratively produced installation – an/aesthetic – may at first appear to be symptomatic of this type of paralysis: the posters in the gallery windows say as much, and the sparsely hung ‘computer print-outs,’ punctuated by a stray power tool, keep the appearance of an incomplete ‘mock up’ for the exhibition. When approached, the individual works reveal themselves to be carefully considered, and aesthetically engaged at a more intimate level.

This exhibition is presented with support from the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at The University of British Columbia.
